You are here: Get Connected Join A Group Group Leader Resources

Would you like to host a Group? All you will need is a television and DVD player and the willingness to open your home.

Be a HOST:

Have a heart for people.
Open your home for a 6-week video series.
Serve some light refreshments.
Tell your friends!

Can I get a friend to help me Host?

Absolutely! We encourage you to pair up with a friend or another couple. Together you can decide how you will share the role of Host. It is our hope that by teaming up with someone else, you can find a way to make this an exciting and challenging adventure for both of you.

How many people should I be expecting to accommodate?

We suggest inviting 15-20 people. Then, after the first night, let those in your group invite some of their own friends if you have room for more. In our experience, about half of those who say they will come will actually come. An optimum number of people is about 10, but if more show up, that's great!

Do I need to be a "Bible Expert" to Host?

Definitely not! The most important thing you need is the desire to serve others and to grow in your own relationship with Christ. When you take this step of faith, God will give you what you need to be an effective Host. We will provide you with all of the materials you will need and tips for hosting your group. If your group decides to continue after the six weeks, we will provide you with several curriculum choices that will be easy to use.

What do I do with the new group that has formed?

As the Host, we are asking that you open your home to this new group for six weeks. We ask that you show the video teaching each week and help the group talk through the “Talk It Over” discussion guide. We also hope that you will pray for those in your group.

Will I be asked to continue Hosting this group after the six weeks is completed?

At the end of the six weeks, we will ask each Host to decide if they want to continue or not. It is our hope that some Hosts will choose to continue with their new groups. If that's not your plan, we hope you will help the group select a new leader and find a new place to meet.

I will be out of town during one of the weeks of the series. Any suggestions?

If you have to miss a group meeting, simply ask someone else in your group to host that evening. If that doesn't work out, there is no problem with pushing the schedule back a week.

How do I get people to come to my Discovery Group?

We will invite the whole church to sign up to join a Discovery Group. This will get the ball rolling but we also encourage you to invite those you know at church, who you would like to have as part of your group. When people sign up who live in your area, we will provide each Host with a list of people to invite to your group. Additionally, you can also invite your relatives, neighbors and co-workers, people you already know who may be interested in this type of group.

How do we handle childcare needs?

This is a sensitive issue. We suggest you seek creative solutions as a group. One common solution is to share the cost of a baby-sitter in another room in the home or in a neighboring home. Another solution is to include them in your group meetings. And remember, kids always love going to Grandma’s or spending the evening at a friend’s house!

How long should the group meeting last?

The average group meeting lasts about 2 hours. We encourage every group to establish a time frame and then stick to it. Starting and ending on time will make the group experience better.

What about inviting un-churched friends?

Discovery Groups are primarily designed to help Christians grow in Christ and connect in friendship. But this may be the perfect way to give your un-churched friends a first-hand glimpse into what real Christian community is all about.
