Community Groups - The key to meeting other Christians

Why We Should Do Community Groups

Because Jesus modeled it

“Jesus’ entire ministry models what it means to live in community. His pattern shows us why community – most particularly community experienced through small group relationships, is necessary, not an option for those of us who bear His name.” (Bill Donahue, Willow Creek’s Director of Small Groups)

We have become an isolated and fragmented society

Sociologically speaking we are “alone in our masses” in what is called a “crowded loneliness.” Larry Crabb in The Safest Place On Earth says, “The resolve to look after oneself breaks fellowship with God and others and involves a violation of our created nature to be givers. Worse, it cuts us off from the resources we need to live that are poured into us from God and others, resources that are only poured into us when we are openly and vulnerably and trustingly connected with others.”

We need each other

We need each other to call out our glories and help us see our blind spots and rough edges. Crabb goes on to say, “We need spiritual friends, broken people who will provide safety for us to be broken, caring people who want us to live and believe we can live well, giving people who pour the life they have received from God into us, people of vision who see the Spirit shaping us into the image of Christ.”

We need to come together

Finally to coin Rick Warren’s famous opening line in The Purpose Driven Life, “It’s not (just) about us." We need to come together to build ourselves up to go out and share God’s love with others. Community groups will become a major part of our mission strategy.
